You purchase a domain name through a service provider called a Domain Name Registrar. The price is typically around $8 to $10 USD for owning a domain for one year. The two most popular name registrars are Namecheap and GoDaddy.
Namecheap (My first choice)

About researching a domain
If you want to know more about any particular domain, you can search it using an internet service called WHOIS
Here’s the main WHOIS search provider to look up a domain: https://whois.icann.org/en
If you don’t want to have your name showing as the owner of your domain, you can select to hide it with privacy options. Namecheap comes with a free privacy guard, WhoisGuard.
